Benjamin Russell Hopkins

Events

Much-loved husband, father and grand-father, Benjamin Russell Hopkins, aged 92, of Oak Grove, Beckley, West Virginia, departed this life at his daughter's home in Georgetown, Kentucky, on Thursday, July 18, 2019. Russell passed peacefully in his sleep. He was the son of the late Willie Green Hopkins and Exie Hopkins (nee Crawford), of Sophia, West Virginia, and is survived by his wife, two daughters, a son, and four grandchildren - namely, Karen Murphy of Georgetown, Kentucky, her husband, Richard Murphy, and her son, Benjamin Murphy; Kathy Goodman of Delray Beach, Florida; and Brian Hopkins of Charleston, West Virginia, and his wife, Lisa Hopkins, and three children, Miranda Hopkins, Jonathan Hopkins and Rosalie Hopkins. He is also survived by his brother, Douglas Hopkins of Crab Orchard, West Virginia. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Robert Lewis, Carl "CW," Clifford, and his sister, Geneva Pittman.
Russell left Beckley at age 16, and worked in the naval yard in Norfolk, Virginia, as a welder and later as a machinist. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the last years of WW II and, after the war, returned to work in the coal mines at Stotesbury, West Virginia, where he met his wife, and love of his life, Mary Bays. Russell and Mary were married in July 1950. Subsequently, the couple moved to Portsmouth, Ohio, where Russell worked in the atomic plant and their oldest daughter, Karen, was born. They returned to West Virginia, in 1956, and lived in Mabscott, where their daughter Kathy was born. They moved to Oak Grove in 1960, where their son, Brian, was born. The couple resided in Oak Grove until moving to Kentucky to live with their daughter Karen in December 2017. Russell worked at the coal mines from 1956, until he retired in 1985. During that time he also ran several businesses, including a machine shop and construction company. After retiring, he also ran a used-car business. Russell was a hard worker and dedicated family man. He was also a long-time member of the Oak Grove Christian Church.
He loved to laugh and shared many joyful times with his beloved grandchildren, family and friends. He will be greatly missed.

Mary, I am so sorry to hear of Russell passing away. I remember so well when you lived across the road from dad and mom when they lived across the road from the church. You were always so kind and were the best neighbor anyone could have. God bless you and your family and just know I have never forgotten you. Love in Christ, Wilma
