Mrs. Bette Jane Caudle McKinney, formerly of Martha's Place in Greensboro, NC, passed away on Tuesday, June 20, 2017 at Countryside Manor in Stokesdale, NC.
No services are planned at this time.
Mrs. McKinney was born in Greensboro on January 20, 1925, the daughter of the late Joseph Paul and Estelle Deal Caudle.
She grew up in Mullens, WV and was a vocal major at Shenandoah Conservatory in Virginia. She met her husband Russell while performing together in a dance band in Mullens in 1947. They eloped on Easter Sunday in 1948. They moved to Greensboro in 1956, where she taught piano in her home studio for many decades, at one point serving as President of The Greensboro Music Teachers' Association.
Prior to their move to Countryside Village in Stokesdale, the McKinney's attended West Market Street United Methodist Church, where Bette sang in the choir. She sang in various church choirs and civic choirs over her many years as a Greensboro resident and was a soloist in her earlier years.
Over her 92 years, her varied interests included painting, knitting, sewing, gardening, quilting, ceramics, reading, and genealogical research. Everything she undertook, she approached with great commitment.
Surviving are her beloved family; her husband of 69 years, Charles Russell McKinney of Stokesdale; children Victoria Anne McKinney of Albany, Georgia, Jane York and her husband, John, of Greensboro, and Rusty McKinney and his wife, Linda, of Holly Springs; grandchildren Elizabeth York (Josh Schwalbach), Kathryn York, Rachel York, Nathaniel McKinney (Alex Woodgeard), Laura McKinney, and Abigail McKinney; and a great granddaughter Harlow McKinney.
The family is very grateful for the wonderful care she was given at Countryside Manor.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to the Alzheimer's Association, 4615 Dundas Drive, Greensboro, NC 27407.
