Charles Edwin Smailes, 65, of Loops Road, passed away Saturday, July 1, 2017, at his home following a sudden illness.
Born July 22, 1951, at Ronceverte, he was the son of the late Edwin and Ollie (Roach) Smailes.
Charlie began his education at Lee's Tree School, then graduated from Nuttall High (1969). In 1973, he graduated from WVU with a B.S. in Animal Science. His degree was put to use as he went on to work in the WV Department of Agriculture as a cattle grader and Livestock Market News Specialist. He also worked as an independent cattle broker, farm manager, and USDA farm survey agent. Through this time, Charlie worked with his family to maintain Sunset View Farms on Loops Road, Rainelle.
Charlie enjoyed cattle sales, farming, and especially watching his grandchildren learn about the farm.
Those left to cherish his memory are his two sons, Chad (Angie) of Rainelle and CJ (Beth) of Loops Road; sister, Brenda (Mike) of Gainesville, GA; brother, George, of Loops Road; grandchildren, Zeke, Maverick, Meredith, Eli, and Charlotte; and a host of extended family and friends.
The family will receive friends at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 5, 2017, at Smathers Funeral Chapel, Inc. Funeral services will begin at 12 noon with burial following in the Sims Cemetery on Loops Road.
