Mr. Charles Peter Smith, 82, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, on August 20, 2017, at the Bowers Hospice House, after a battle with cancer.
Charles was known by several nicknames "Charles" by co-workers "Pete" by friends and "Sonny" by family members.
Charles was born December 24, 1934 in East Park, the son of the late Ollie C. Smith and Marion Traynham Smith Staples.
He received Christ at an early age. He went to work at age 16 working various jobs, before coming a coal miner. In the coal mines he worked at East Gulf and several other mines throughout Southern West Virginia.
In 1956 he married his childhood sweetheart Helen, they were married 52 years. In 1990 he was ordained a deacon at Mt. Zion Baptist Church. He had said that he had performed the functions of a deacon before being ordained. He visited the sick and regularly helped friends and elderly neighbors when they needed work done. He served as Deacon and Trustee at Mt. Zion, faithfully until his health began to decline. He was a. devoted father and grandfather.
He was preceded in death by his wife Helen of 52 years, his mother Marion Staples, father Ollie C. Smith, and Stepfather J.L. Staples.
Left to cherish his memory are daughters; Evangelist Sandra (Matt) Milam and Sharon Smith Minor; foster son, Robert Edward and three grandchildren; Ri Hanna Minor, Houston TX, Caylon Minor and Kirsten Minor of Beckley, and his good friend of over 60 years George Brown of Beckley and special friend Donnie Minor of Beckley, and a host of cousins, including; Dorothy Coalston (Azel) of Cleveland, Ohio and Frances Hurtte of Beckley.
Funeral Services will be at 1p.m. Friday, August 25, 2017 at Heart of God Ministries, 1701 South Kanawha Street, with Fred T. Simms officiating, Entombment will be at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity, WV. Visitation will be from 11 until time of services.
