Clifford's Story

Text size

Clifford Harlan Mann, 100 years old, of Daniels, went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday November 26th, 2017.
Harlan or "Shorty" as he was known to many friends, was born in Fireco, WV, on August 30th, 1917, and grew up in Daniels and Beaver, graduating from Shady Spring High School in 1937.
He married the love of his life, Macil Blanche Farley in February 1939 and had 68 beautiful years with her before her going to be with the Lord. They were inseparable all their years together. They had three daughters: Judith Kay in 1941, Linda Carole in 1947, and Anita Ellen in 1960. Harlan's joy in life was his family. He was never happier than when he was spending time with them.
In 1942, after the war began he moved his family to Baltimore, Maryland to work at Glen L. Martin Aviation Plant, where he was a wing rivitor building the B-26 Marauder. These were his only years outside West Virginia. Moving back to his beloved mountains, he began working at Appalachian Power Company in Beckley in 1947, where he was employed for 32 years as lead draftsman before retiring in 1979.
Harlan had a deep passion for the outdoors. He began camping with the family in the 1950's and was still traveling with Macil in their motorhome well into his eighties... where in over 20 years of retirement together they visited all 48 contiguous states.
He loved hiking, had a beautiful tenor voice and led music at Daniels Community Church for many years. The most important things in his life were his relationship with the Lord and his family whom he loved unconditionally. He was a tender, compassionate man who never met a stranger, always had a word of encouragement and radiated the light of Christ wherever he went. He spent the last few years at the Bayberry Retirement Inn where he will be greatly missed by staff and friends.
Harlan was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Macil Blanche Farley Mann on February 2nd., 2007.
He has three daughters: Judith Kay Lilly and her husband Clarence Lilly of Socastee, South Carolina; Linda Carole Green and husband Dr. Ronald Green of Lewisburg; and Anita Ellen Walker and husband Paul Walker of Morgantown, WV. Six grandchildren: Ritch Lilly and fiance Jennifer Morgan of Murrells Inlet, SC; Ronnie Green and wife Janett of Grandview; Michael Green and wife Debbie of Beaver; Kristin Vandall and husband Jamie of Beckley; Kellie Snuffer and husband Ryan of Beckley; and Kimberly Phillips and husband Kevin of Morgantown, WV. Eight great grandchildren: Drew and Emily Green, Brett and Courtney Green, Hannah and Luke Snuffer, Lyric Noel, and Hayden Phillips.
A viewing will be held at Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home, Beckley, WV, Tuesday evening , from 6 PM until 8 PM.
