David Lee Friley
Born in Beckley on October 1st, 1931, he was the son the late Hazel Friley.
David spent his childhood in Beckley, graduating from Woodrow Wilson High School, Class of 1949. Gifted in sports from the time he was a child, David excelled throughout his high school years, being a two time wrestling state champion in 1948 and 1949. David received a scholarship to play football at West Virginia Tech. He was derailed by an injury in his first year in college and was unable to play. His passion for sports would never wane.
A veteran of the US Air Force, David would return to Beckley and had a very successful career in sales with the May Office and Central Printing. He was elected Civitan of the Year in 1979.
David was blessed with his family. His first son, Larry Friley and wife Sue reside in Menifee, California. On July 22nd, 1966, he would marry the love of his life, Gayle Porterfield. To this union would be born Tara and Brian. Tara is married to Bill Mason and they make their home in New Orleans, Brian resides in Erie, Pennsylvania. He was a beloved father to all three of us.
David is the proud grandfather of Mitchell (Mandy) Mason, Matthew (Jordan) Mason and Michael Mason.
The Frileys worshiped at St. Francis de Sales Church. In 2010 Gayle passed away following a brief battle with cancer and now, "Oh Glad Reunion."
David's passion for sports would always be an integral part of his life. Affectionately known as "Coach" he was involved in the midget football program throughout the 1970's. He was inducted in the Raleigh County Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1981. An avid golfer David played on courses throughout West Virginia and Virginia.
David Friley will be remembered for his outgoing personality. He was genuine, the real deal, all the way to the end.
The Rite of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, December 19th at 5:00 pm in the Melton Mortuary Chapel. The Rev. Mr. William Donald Wise will be officiating. The family is receiving friends at 3:00 pm. David and Gayle's ashes will be interred in St. Sebastian Cemetery next summer.
