Derrick Ward Banks


Derrick Ward Banks, 44, of Beckley, died August 10th in Richmond, VA.
The son of Barbara Banks of Beckley, and Lewis Banks, of Midlothian, VA, Derrick was born August 25, 1974 in Long Island, NY.
Derrick is survived by his son, Pvt. Cortlan Drake Banks, MCAS, Cherry Point, NC; his parents, his brother, Kevon Banks of Pontiac, IL, his paternal grandmother, Edith Banks Seymour, of Macon, GA; great aunt, Mary Dunn of Lancaster, KY; his aunts, Vicki (Joe) Oliver of Beckley, Yvonne (James) Hume of Petersburg, VA; his great uncle, Darrell Dyer of Beckley, and his uncles Donnie and Ronnie Morgan of Maryland and Kentucky, respectively, and his significant other, Lauravilla (Nicole) Jones, and his bonus granddaughter, Kha'laiah Nicholes.
Derrick was a gifted athlete and student. A Presidential Academic Award winner, he attended Kentucky Country Day School in Louisville, Camp Dick Robinson Elementary and Garrard County High School in Lancaster, KY, and Eastern Kentucky State University in Richmond, KY.
Until recently, he was employed by the City of Beckley Department of Public Works, where he developed rich and warm relationships with other employees who have proven themselves to be true friends.
Visitation will be in the Durgan Funeral Home Chapel on Thursday, August 23rd from 6 to 8 pm. Memorial Services will be held at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church in Lancaster, KY.
Arrangements are entrusted to Durgan Funeral Home,1501 S. Kanawha St. Beckley.
