Don Robert Smathers, 89, of Rainelle, passed away peacefully Saturday, September 15, 2018, at his home following a long illness.
Born March 2, 1929, in Buchtel, Ohio, he was the son of the late Edward and Mable Martin Smathers.
Don graduated from Buchtel High School and served in the US army during the Korean War. He then graduated from Cincinnati School of Embalming. Don owned and operated Smathers Funeral Chapel in Rainelle for over 50 years. He was a member of the Rainelle United Methodist Church, where he served as a Youth Sunday School teacher for many years; worked with the Methodist Youth Fellowship; and sang in the choir. Don served on the Board of Directors of the First National Bank of Alderson (Greenbrier Valley National Bank); the Rainelle Volunteer Fire Department Board of Directors; former Rainelle Rotary Club; the Bill Carneal Committee; and served on the East Rainelle Town Council.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his daughter Lorrie Ann Smathers; 2 brothers Paul Edward and Bundy Smathers; and 2 sisters Ada Wallace and Laila Vasko.
Survivors include his devoted wife of 63 years, Marcelle Gwinn Smathers; his daughter, Monica Venable of Rainelle; 3 granddaughters, Lorri Patterson Woolfolk (Dion) of Concord, North Carolina, Abby Don Honaker of Beckley, and Ellie Seymour (Kurry) of Summerville, South Carolina; 15 great-grandchildren, Isaac, Jael, Noelle, Mae, Matthias, Lucas, and Leilani Woolfolk, Eden, Nathaniel, Gabriel, and Andrew Honaker, and Norah, Coda, Kai, and Ella Seymour; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
The family wishes to thank the staff of the Greenbrier Valley HospiceCare; Dr. Chris Martin; and the staff at the Rainelle Medical Center for the professional and loving care he was given.
Services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 18, in the Rainelle United Methodist Church with Pastor Jonathan Dierdorff officiating. Burial will follow in the Wallace Memorial Cemetery at Clintonville with Military Honors provided by the Mercer County Honor Guard.
Friends may call from 2 - 4 and 6 - 8 p.m. at Smathers Funeral Chapel and one hour before the service at the church from 10 - 11 a.m.
