Doris Dale Spencer Bias Cross, 94, died peacefully at home with loved ones by her side on November 9, 2017.
A longtime Poquoson, VA, resident, she was born November 3, 1923, in Nellis, WV, and grew up in Boone Co. WV. She raised 3 children in the hills of WV coal towns, at one time owning the Sweet Shop in Sophia, WV.
In mid-life, she studied to become an LPN, working in various health care settings and ultimately becoming the Supervisor of the FMRS (Fayette-Monroe-Raleigh-Summers) Mental Health Council's Raleigh County Day Care Center for special needs children.
A devoted daughter, wife and mother, Doris loved music and playing the piano. She was an excellent seamstress, loved needlework, cooking, gardening, travel, crossword puzzles, her beloved pets & watching the birds from her porch who made their home in her backyard.
Mrs. Cross was pre-deceased by her husband, John W. "Bill" Cross, first husband Chester Bias, brothers Eugene & Thomas Spencer, son-in-law Barry Sklar, and stepson John W. Cross Jr.
She is survived by her 3 children Judith Sklar of Alexandria, VA, James Bias (Mary Frances) of Sophia, WV, and Patricia Bias of Arlington, VA. She is also survived by her stepdaughters and their spouses, Susie Harrell (Carey) and Patti Roberts (John), of Poquoson, VA. Mrs. Cross leaves behind 8 loving grandchildren, Joel Sklar, Adam Sklar, Jimmy Bias, Scott Bias, Bryan Harrell, Michelle Harrell, Bryce Roberts and Perry Roberts Harris; 4 great-grandchildren, CG Hare, Justin Bias, Sarah Sklar and Luke Harrell; and her beloved feline companion, Sassy.
Visitation and a Celebration of Life service will be held Thursday, November 16, 2017, at the Claytor Rollins Funeral Home in Poquoson, VA. Burial will take place on Saturday, November 18, at 2pm, with a chapel service at the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens mausoleum in Beckley, WV, led by Pastor David Rumberg. Friends are invited to the Fellowship Hall of the Sophia United Methodist Church to visit with the family following the service.
