Edna Lorraine Settle
The daughter of the late Earnest and Almia Thomas, Edna was born on February 19, 1927, in Stella, VA.
She was one of the first five women ever admitted to VPI (Virginia Tech). While attending college, she worked for the U.S. Army in a civilian capacity during World War II, making topographic maps, until meeting the man she would marry, John L. Settle, Jr.
Edna and John were married in August 10, 1947, in Fayetteville. Her husband went on to become a pharmaceutical sales representative, while Edna dealt with the procurement and sale of antiquities, opening her own antique store in Fayetteville, which she named "Cracker Barrel Antiques". She and her husband also opened a restaurant for a short while.
During the course of their marriage, Edna and John had two children, Matthew and Catherine, whom they absolutely adored. The family traveled extensively before finally settling down in Fayetteville. They were long-time, devoted members of First Baptist Church of Fayetteville, with Edna holding the distinction of being the church's longest standing member at the time of her passing. Edna was also a member of the Red Hat Society and the Beckley Art Club.
In addition to her parents, Edna was preceded in death by her husband, John L. Settle, Jr., sisters Barbara and Louise, and her beloved children, Matthew Settle and Catherine (Settle) Tardiff.
Left to cherish her memory are her grandchildren, Joshua L. Zickafoose and wife, Tina, of Mooresville, NC; granddaughter Brooke A. Hopkins of Athens, WV; great grandchildren Brady Zickafoose of Princeton, WV; Ryder and Renyck Mills of Athens, WV;, step-great grandchildren Brittany Feury (and fiancé Aaron White) of South Point, OH; Nickla Tomlinson (and husband Ryan) of Bluefield, WV; and Edris Akers of Huntington, WV; three step-great great grandchildren; niece Joyce Ridenhour and great nieces Johanna and Katherine Ridenhour, all of Wilmington, NC, and special friends Peggy Smarr and Mary Sue Horricks of Fayetteville, as well as many other dear friends and neighbors.
