Everett's Story

Text size

After a wonderful life, Everett G. Acord "Poo," 77, of Madison, VA, (formerly Beckley, WV) passed away on July 28, 2017, surrounded by his family. Born in Sun, WV, in 1939, to Harvey Daryl and Leuna Sue Acord (née Warwick), he was raised in a coal camp in the shadow of the depression. Given his experiences growing up in a coal camp, Everett dedicated a half century of his life to increase the health and safety of coal miners across the nation. Serving as the safety director for the United Mine Workers of American (UMWA) and subsequently serving as UMWA District 29 President, Everett was always on the march for worker's rights. In retirement, he continued his affiliation with the UMWA as a local union financial secretary, enjoyed his early morning/late evening walks and gardening.
Surviving are his wife of 42 years, Sandy K. Acord; children, Tammy Covington, John and Robert Acord; son-in-law, Christopher; and grandchild Cameron.
The family would like to thank the dedicated team of physicians, nurses, and staff at the University of Virginia Medical Center. In lieu of flowers and in light of the staff's dedication at the UVA Medical Center, the family request a contribution to http://get-involved.uvahealth.com/goto/eacord.
