Frank Edward "Ed" Hicks, Jr., 88, of Springdale, passed away Saturday, August 19, 2017, in the St. Mary's Hospital in Huntington, following a long illness.
Born July 16, 1929, at Green Sulphur Springs, he was the son of the late Frank E. and Carrie Fink Hicks, Sr.
Ed worked most of his career as a pipe fitter in the shipyards. Upon his retirement and return to West Virginia, he owned and operated Hicks' Store. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Shanda Woolwine Hicks; 2 sons Allen and Mike Hicks; 1 daughter Joan Cheak; 1 great-granddaughter Rahnea Walker; 7 brothers Ellsworth, Eldridge, Orville, Elmond, Everette, Eugene, and Emerson Hicks; and 4 sisters Ermajean, Bernice, Evelyn, and Bertell.
Survivors include 1 son Greg Hicks (Rhonda) of Hampton, Virginia; 3 daughters Gloria Werner of Springdale, Eugenia Johnson of Newport News, Virginia, and Brenda Serber of Hampton, Virginia; 3 sisters Ernestine of New York, Elizabeth of Virginia, and Barbara of Tennessee; 16 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews and extended family.
Friends may call from 6 - 8 p.m. Tuesday, August 22, at Smathers Funeral Chapel, Inc. The burial will be in the Hampton Memorial Gardens, Hampton, Virginia.
