Garland Ray Plumley Garland Ray Plumley, age 96, of Beckley, WV, passed away at the Beckley VA Medical Center, on Wednesday, January 16, 2019.
Born September 12, 1922 in Pear, he was the son of the late George Washington Plumley and Lena Belle Toothman Plumley.
Mr. Plumley was a retired coal miner and a member of the UMWA. He was a US Army Veteran, and was a highly decorated combat veteran serving under General George S. Patton. He served in the Normandy Invasion at Omaha Beach, fought across France, Belgium, and Germany where he was wounded. General George S. Patton personally awarded him the purple heart at a field hospital in Germany, when he was severely wounded.
Mr. Plumley enjoyed hunting and working on the farm at Abraham. He also enjoyed boxing and going to boxing matches.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dorotha Plumley; two sons, Dennis Lowe Plumley, and Roger Dale Plumley; by brothers, Rheo, Lester and Amos Plumley; by sisters, Faye Pyatt, Arbutus Bennett, and Ethelene Adkins and an infant sister.
Those survivors left to cherish his memory include his sons, James Garland Plumley and Danny Ray Plumley, both of Abraham; four grandchildren, Donny Ray Plumley and wife Jennifer, of Grandview, Jennifer Harrell of PA, Melissa Boreal and husband Jerzy Bajdiuk of Italy, and James Travis Trayser Plumley of Maryland; great grandchildren, Hunter and Chaise Harrell, Wyatt and Serenity Plumley; a brother, Lloyd Plumley of Pluto Road, Shady Spring, and two sisters, Rosemary Plumley of Oak Grove, and Madeline Redden of Shady Spring. Many nieces and nephews also survive.
The family extends special thanks to the Beckley VA Medical Center for the wonderful care given to Mr. Plumley by their outstanding staff. Your assistance over the past three years will always be treasured.
Funeral services will be conducted at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley on Sunday, January 20, 2019 at 3 PM with Rev. John Wesley Richmond officiating. Burial will follow at New Salem Baptist Church Cemetery at Abraham. Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to the services on Sunday at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be James Plumley, Danny Plumley, Lloyd Plumley, Donny Plumley, Gerald Trent, and Donnie Dawson.

What a joy to have gotten to know him at the church during gospel sings. Amazing history to reflect on. General George is a distant cousin, too.

The times we shared at the races and on the river will always be a precious memory. Garland was more than an uncle, he was our second Dad. We love you always.
