Genevieve's Story

Text size

BECKLEY [ndash] If you met Genevieve Diehl, she probably had you in her living room for tea, or around her table for a meal. She left us to go to her eternal home on November 15th, 2017. Genevieve Henry Diehl died peacefully in her home, surrounded by family in Beckley, WV. Her wit, her wisdom, and her beautiful spirit will live on in her four children, eight grandchildren, and great grandchild.
Genevieve was born in Portia, AR, on September 20, 1930, to Riley Daniel Henry and Nora Shanks Henry.
She graduated from Harding College in 1950, the same year she married Ralph Ernest Diehl, her husband of 62 years. Ralph proceeded her is death in 2012. She said, "62 years together and never a dull moment. Not always pleasant, but never dull!" After college, Ralph and Genevieve lived in Ralph's hometown of Mendham, NJ for several years before moving to King of Prussia, PA, Parkersburg, and finally Beckley, WV, where they spent the rest of their lives.
Genevieve was a teacher, an etiquette expert, a devout Christian, a fantastic cook and an amazing mother and grandmother. Her children and her grandchildren know exactly what fork to use in any situation. No one ate with their mouth open at her table, and they certainly did not cut all their meat prior to eating it. Her recipes, published in several cookbooks over the years, will be one of her many legacies. While her children never heard her utter one word of profanity, they knew she was mad if she told them she was "angry as six bears." Genevieve taught English as a Second Language in her retirement, showing the kind of love and compassion for hundreds of international students that only she could show. She touched lives at work, at church, and especially at home. She will be missed.
Genevieve is survived by Dan Diehl of Woodbridge, VA, Jeff Diehl and his wife, Donna, of Lockbridge, WV, Nicolas Diehl and his wife, Layne, of Martinsburg, WV , and Sally Parsons and her husband, Ernie, of Beckley, WV, eight grandchildren, one great grandson.
She donated her body to medical research.
A celebration of Genevieve's life will be held December 23 at Faith Community Church at 299, Grey Flats Road in Beckley.
Donations of Sympathy may be made to Hospice of Southern WV, 454 Cranberry Dr, Beckley, WV 25801.
