Events

Grathel Copley, age 99, of Daniels, WV, passed away at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley on Wednesday, February 27, 2019.
Born on November 25, 1919, at Blue Jay, she was the daughter of the late Gilbert Richmond and Cora Pack Richmond.
Grathel lived a long and productive life, being the epitome of independence. She had great pride in her abilities to be self-sufficient with a keen mind and spirit that matched the wit of all who engaged her. Beneath her sharp personality and studious nature was a deep compassion and loyal devotion
to her family and friends. This she illustrated by often greeting and hosting friends in her home as well as being the primary caretaker for her sister, Elsie.
Her devotion was never more tested than when her beloved husband, James Albert Copley, volunteered with the United States Navy to fight in WWII. For three long years Grathel collected newspapers and Time Life Magazines to keep tabs on her Jim.
After the war, they set out together to become entrepreneurs of property and services. Of these ventures, they saw the most success in being landlords and poultry farmers. Individually, Grathel also went on to become the lead housekeeping supervisor for Fairchild Industries in Glen Morgan. In addition to her economic ventures, Grathel also had enormous compassion for nature and animals. Her beloved pets ranging from ducks to guinea fowl, chicken and cats, all held a respected place in Grathel's heart.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James "Jim" Copley, by brother James Grant Richmond, and sisters, Elsie Richmond, Irene Smith, Wilma Elliott, Eva Lykins, Florence Copley and Faun Kincaid. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Survivors include many nieces and nephews. Her caregiver for the past several years was Lois Sexton.
The family extends special thanks to Bowers Hospice House for the excellent care given to Grathel.
Funeral services will be conducted at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley on Monday, March 4, 2019 at 11AM with Pastor Luke Richmond officiating. Entombment will follow at Blue Memorial Gardens Mausoleum at Prosperity, WV. Friends may visit with the family from 6 PM until 8:30 PM on Sunday at the funeral home.
