Jacquelyn Jeanette Dyer
Jackie was born Sept. 23, 1950, in Beckley, WV. She graduated from high school in Washington Heights, NY in 1969. She then relocated to Charleston, where she would spend the rest of her life. She was a long time residence of the "West Side" and was a pillar in the community.
Jackie worked for Verizon (formerly C&P and Bell Atlantic) for 30 years, beginning her career as a switch board operator in 1972 and ended her career as a RCMAC clerk in 2001.
Jackie was a devoted mother, grandmother and dedicated friend, she never met a stranger. Known as the "Jheri curl" lady, she was the hair stylist for most of the neighborhood children. She loved children with all her heart and served as a babysitter to many in her retired years. Certain days of the week, she fed her block with fish fry's and liver and onion days.
Jackie loved spending time with her friends and family playing bid whist and going to Bingo; she was an avid Bingo player.
She was preceded in death by her biological mother, Constance J. Dyer Robinson. Her parents, Eldred and Thelma Dyer; brothers, Garland Dyer, Ronald Dyer, James Dyer and Dannye Dyer; sisters, Joyce L. Brown, Gladys Eight and Phyllis Cook.
Jackie's legacy will live on through her children: Anita (Ronald) Dyer-Walker of Charleston, and Jai Dyer of Beckley. Grandchildren: Jaisson Dyer of Louisville, KY, Jordan Dyer, Rashaund, Adara and Rhodri Walker, all of Charleston, Jonah and Jenna Dyer of Beckley; one great-grandchild, Genesis Kash Moon Walker; sister, Joyce "Cukie" Thomas of Charleston; brother, Darrell "Kiki" Dyer of Beckley; and a host of nieces, nephews, close cousins and good friends, including one special niece, Rickara (John) Stevens of Charleston.
Homegoing service for Jackie will be 1 pm Saturday, at the First Baptist Church, Shrewsbury St., Charleston, with viewing at 12 noon.
The family would like to give special thanks to the staff of the Genesis healthcare nursing home, The Valley Center, for caring for Jackie for the last 4 1/2 years. And a special thanks to the loving staff of Hubbard Hospice House.
