James K. Carper

James Kenneth Carper, 88, died on February 1, 2019. Jim was born August 19, 1930, to Wesley and Lillian McClure Carper. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Betty; son Pete; sister, Margaret Ann Maddy; sisters in law and brothers in law. He is survived by daughter, Lynda Gilkeson; brother, Bob Carper; grandchildren, Stephanie Barnes, Kenneth Carper, Nicole Stuntz; two great granddaughters, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Jim was a lifelong resident of Grandview and a member of the Grandview Christian Church. He was the developer of Beechwood and other properties in Grandview. He owned and operated businesses including Carper Excavating, Grandview Crushed White Sand, a Black Angus cattle farm at Grandview, and was a decades-long heavy equipment contractor with New River Coal Company. He was a hard-working man, a true friend, and known as a man whose word and handshake were a binding contract.
Jim and Betty loved traveling in their motor homes, and enjoyed exploring from Alaska to Key West and everywhere between. Their grandchildren have wonderful memories of trips with them. He was an amazing historian, with stories about adventures and family through the generations. Always, before everything else, his first commitment was to his wife, children and grandchildren.
