James "Jim" Calvin Goddard, 88, of West Palm Beach, Florida, formerly of Beckley, died on August 22, 2017.
Jim was born on April 19, 1929, at Keyrock, WV, the son of the late Roy and Myrtle Goddard.
A member of the Memorial Baptist Church, he had served as a deacon and was a former member of the church choir. Jim was a graduate of Pineville High School, where he was a four-year letterman in football, basketball, baseball and was the valedictorian of his graduating class.
He graduated from Morris Harvey College (University of Charleston) in 1952, where he attended on a four-year scholarship in basketball. At Morris Harvey, Jim was a four-year letterman, served as captain his senior year and was chosen All Conference (WVIAC) his senior year. He received the George King Trophy for being voted the outstanding player for his team during his senior year.
Later, Jim received his Master's Degree in Guidance and Counselling from West Virginia University. Upon graduation from college, he was appointed head basketball coach at Oceana High School. A few weeks later he was drafted into the military service, where he served for two years; thirteen of those were spent in Korea.
Just prior to discharge from service he was appointed head basketball coach at Pineville High School. Jim served a total of 13 years there in the capacity as coach, teacher, and guidance counselor; he was also a basketball official for several years.
In 1967, Jim moved to Beckley and served as guidance counselor at Beckley Junior High School until his retirement in 1985. He is a member of the West Virginia and Raleigh County Association of Retired School Employees and was a former member of the National Education Association.
Jim was as an avid sports fan and enjoyed playing golf, gardening, riding his motorcycle and spending winters in Leesburg, Florida. He won numerous golf awards, the last, being champion of the Pennbrooke Fairways, Florida Men's Golf League in 1998, and 2000.
In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his son, Michael Kipling "Kip" Goddard; a brother, Alvin Goddard; and three sisters, Louise Fisher, Lucille Cook and Catherine Stewart.
Jim leaves his beloved wife, Mary Frances Davis Goddard.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, August 29, at 11:00 am at the Memorial Baptist Church, 1405 South Kanawha Street, Beckley. Dr. Charles Bright will be officiating. The family will receive friends at 10:00 am at the church. Burial will follow in the Sunset Memorial Park.
Honorary pallbearers will be Mike Doughty, Dave Friley, Bob Maltempie, Gary Kershner, Russell Manns, Russell Cook, Christopher Vecellio and Michael Vecellio.
