Those survivors left to cherish his memory include his wife, Judy Hamrick Hicks; daughter, Renee Hicks; sons Matt (Melanie) Hicks and Jason (Kimi) Hicks; grandchildren Lindsay, Tyler, Levi and Kamryn and a great grandchild, Makenna.
For over 20 years, J.D. worked the hilltops of WV strip mines as a heavy equipment mechanic. Early in his career, he was employed by Vecellio & Grogan and Tracy and Warren Hylton for Eller, Upper Laurel, Tammie Lynn and Patience coal companies. He also worked 20 years as Service Manager for Heritage Equipment in Beckley, WV.
Besides being known as an extraordinary mechanic, J.D. was known to many as the aggressive #42 (late model) dirt track driver at Beckley and Fairplains, WV and Wytheville, VA Speedways. J.D. loved to work and was happiest when he was home working on the farm. His favorite things to do were cutting, bailing and hauling those "BIG" loads of hay, working with the cattle and donkeys and rebuilding old farm tractors. J.D. was "A Jack of all Trades" and his motto was "I like to do what people say can't be done." J.D. was a born-again Christian.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to everyone who took the time to visit, brought all the delicious food and sent such special cards. Thanks also go to the Neurology Department at Duke University Hospital and Hospice of Southern WV for their excellent care of J.D.
