HUNTSVILLE, AL[ndash] Mr. James A. Wright, 85, of Huntsville, formerly of Beckley, WV, died Saturday, September 2, 2017.
Born January 29, 1932 in Beckley, WV, he was the son of the late James H. and Wilma Smith Wright.
James attended Morton Reeves Elementary and Stratton High School where he was an athlete that participated in many sports (basketball, football and track) as well as a member of the Bulldogs Band.
Upon graduation, he attended the HBC Bluefield State College and was a member of the Big Blues basketball team. James graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education from Bluefield State.
After graduation, he entered the US Army and upon an honorable discharge from the Army James returned to Beckley and began a long and rewarding career as an educator in the Raleigh County Schools System, which spanned over a period of 34 years. James started his career as a teacher and taught at Lester, Lincoln and Piney Oaks Elementary Schools. He spent summers coaching, and mentoring youth in the community. He completed a Master's Degree in Education from West Virginia University and was elected to serve as principle at Piney Oaks, where he remained until its closure; he then transferred to Institute and served as principal until being elected to join the Raleigh County Board of Education. He served in the position of Assistant Superintendent of Schools for Raleigh County until his retirement in 1989. Upon his retirement, he continued to be active in the community, serving on various boards and committees to include the YMCA, Women's Resource Center, Raleigh County Credit Union, Surrogate Parent Board member for the Child Care Center.
James was a life time member of the Kappa Alpha Psi, fraternity and Ebenezer Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Suzanne Wright; son, Douglas J. Wright and sister, Charlotte Wright Watson.
Those left to cherish precious memories are his three sons, Michael (Felecia) of Huntsville AL, Gregory (Vickie) of Raleigh, NC and Kevin (Maria) of Charleston, WV; nine grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral service will be 2 pm on Sunday, September 10, 2017 at Ebenezer Baptist Church, 770 S. Fayette St., Beckley, with Bishop Clarence Jackson officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity.
