Leona Pearl Burns, 96, died December 8, 2017. Leona was devoted to her family, her community and her church. She and her husband, Carl, enjoyed more than 57 years of marriage before his death in 1998.
She was born in Glen White, W.Va. in 1921 and was the daughter of Everett and Linnie Bell Lilly. She touched the lives of thousands of youth through her more than 46 years of service to the Raleigh County 4-H program. As part of her employment with the West Virginia University extension service she coordinated and judged 4-H activities across the county, and planned activities and directed food and meals at the Raleigh County 4-H camp.
Leona had a strong faith and served through preparing food. She was church hostess at First Baptist Church beginning in the late 1950s and then at Memorial Baptist Church through the late 1990s.
She is survived by her son Roger, daughter Edith Loving Trail, and grandchildren Todd Burns, Lollie Burns, Courtney Cooper, James Cooper and great-grandchildren Mitchell Burns, Gavin Burns and Josephine Cooper.
The family will have a memorial service and will receive guests at Memorial Baptist Church - Beckley, WV Sunday, December 10 at 2:30 p.m.
Memorial donations, in lieu of flowers may be made to Memorial Baptist Church or the 4-H All-Stars.
