Mary Elizabeth Shrewsbery
Mary Elizabeth Shrewsbery of Ballard, WV, passed away at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley on Tuesday, November 5, 2019.
Born on November 2, 1938 in Jacksonville, Florida, she was the daughter of the late Thomas R. and Mary R. Braswell Overstreet.
In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years James "Jim" Shrewsbery, son James "Tommy" Shrewsbery, brother Clifford "Buddy" Overstreet, and son-in-law Dennis Glenn Robinson.
Mary came to West Virginia with her parents after completion of 18 months in nursing school. She met her husband while working at the telephone company and they were married on February 4, 1958.
She loved to spend time with her family and friends. You could always find her in the kitchen baking and being a gracious host with all who entered the door. She loved to find ways to help others through community events and participation in Countryside Baptist Church activities. If she wasn't cooking or baking, she had a book in her hand.
She raised her three children while helping run the family insurance business from 1958 until they closed in 2012. She and Jim retired to their farm in Monroe County where she loved to front porch sit and watch the deer in the fields.
Those survivors left to cherish her memory include daughters, Jeanie Bell and husband Matt, of Shady Spring, and Kathy Wall of Beaver. Grandchildren: Tyler Robinson and wife Brooke, Erin Bell Gravley and husband Bill, Katelin Wall and Tom Bell. Great-grandchildren: Asa James "AJ", Alexandra and Jessa Robinson, and Macie Elizabeth Gravley. Sister Molly DeLettre of Jacksonville, Florida and her children (Mary Peninoy, Holly DeLettre, and Chris DeLettre) and many nieces, nephews, in-laws and very close friends also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley on Friday, November 8, 2019 at 2 PM with Pastor Jim Blume officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity, WV. Friends may visit with the family from noon until service time on Friday at the funeral home.
