Neil E. Bays Neil E. Bays, 83, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 13, at his Shady Spring home with his family at his side.

Born April 28, 1935, Neil was the son of Kenneth and Wilda Bays of Slab Fork, a community he loved and often shared fond memories of. He was preceded in death by a brother, Larry Bays, and a sister, Kenna Holt.

Survivors include his loving wife of 57 years, Sandra Burnette Bays; two children, Ken Bays of Lewisburg, and Lisa Bays of Edinburg, Texas; a brother, Jerry Bays and his wife Ann of Beckley; a sister-in-law, Theresa Bays of Beckley; a brother-in-law, Howard Burnette and his wife Nancy of Cornelius, N.C.; nephews Max Bays of Odenton, Md., and Pierce Holt of Apex, N.C.; and nieces Julie Bays of Beckley, Caroline Crumpton of Fernandina Beach, Fla., Mary Bays of Fair Lawn, N.J., and Carol Cullen of Miami, Fla..

Neil graduated from Sophia High School and earned a degree in mining engineering from WVU. He worked for Slab Fork Coal Company during college and became the company's coal preparation manager after graduating. He later served as executive vice president of Lively Manufacturing & Equipment, was president of the West Virginia Society of Professional Engineers and was executive vice president of the National Society of Professional Engineers.

In 1980 he was named West Virginia's Engineer of the Year. With his two brothers, he formed a company, Bays Inc., where he served as president. He was also chairman of the Shady Spring Public Service District Board.

Neil was a dedicated member of Trinity Presbyterian Church in Shady Spring for more than 30 years, serving as an elder and organist.

Services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, March 16, at Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home Shady Spring Chapel. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park in Beckley. Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations of sympathy be made to Trinity Presbyterian Church at P.O. Box 370, Shady Spring 25918, or to Hospice of Southern West Virginia.
