Phillip Edward Jarvis

August 12, 2018

Phillip Edward Jarvis Phillip Edward Jarvis, "P.J.", 79, passed away peacefully from complications related to Parkinson's Disease at the Peyton Hospice House in Lewisburg, WV, on August 12, 2018.
Born in Van Wert, OH, P.J. graduated from Ohio Wesleyan and Ohio State University with his M.D. in 1964. He worked in various specialities during his career, including emergency, critical care, nephrology and internal medicine.
He moved his family to Lookout, WV, in 1983 where he found his home in the mountains among people he loved. He and his wife, Maggie, started their own clinic helping a rural and underserved population, which eventually became New River Health system. He found sobriety in 1986 and became an active member of A.A., most enjoying helping others with their own path to sobriety. He began working at Rainelle Medical Center in 1988 and practiced medicine there until his retirement in 2002, helping hundreds of people he considered his friends and family. He remarried in 2006 to Sheila George and left retirement briefly in 2008 to start his own practice, Western Greenbrier Internal Medicine. He officially retired from medicine in 2013 and enjoyed his passions -- his wife, dogs, history, politics and reading voraciously.
P.J. was most happy when he was working, helping others and learning. He was quick to hug, slow to anger and believed in putting others before himself. He was quiet, but quick-witted and always enjoyed studying and laughing. He was most proud of his family, his 32 years of sobriety and his work helping people.
P.J. is survived by his wife, Sheila George; sister Sally Rossfeld; brothers Bruce and Jim Jarvis; sons Jim Richard and Shaun George; daughters Jennifer Richard, Jayne Hull, Katherine Ferrier, Barbaraanne Squier, Melanie Del Frari; and several grandchildren.
Visiting hours for friends and family will be held at Smathers Funeral Home in Rainelle, on Friday, Aug. 17, 2018 from 5 to 7 pm.
In lieu of flowers, his family requests donations be made to the Peyton Hospice House in Lewisburg, WV, 1265 Maplewood Avenue, Lewisburg, WV, 24901.
Arrangements by Smathers Funeral Chapel, Inc., Rainelle.
