Rev. William's Story
Rev. William Howard Gwinn, Jr., 86, of Meadow Bridge, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Thursday, February 8, 2018, in the Raleigh General Hospital, Beckley.
Born February 17, 1931, at Hemlock, he was the son of the late William and Lillie Moore Gwinn, Sr.
Rev. Gwinn was called into the ministry in 1950. He served in the Whitesville First Baptist Church for 38 years. William Howard served in many different churches for a total of 65 years. He also taught school on Sims Mountain; Highland Mountain; and at Green Valley, in Nicholas County. He was a member of the Elton Community Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 63 years, Virginia Hayslette Gwinn; an infant son Stanley Gwinn; and his brother Bobby E. Gwinn.
Survivors include 2 sons Keith Gwinn (Angie) of Monroe, North Carolina, and Brian Gwinn of Meadow Bridge; 3 daughters Gail Gibbs (Bill) of Augusta, Georgia, Connie Lewis (Scott) of China Grove, North Carolina, and Sheri Miller (Dell) of Mt. Holly, North Carolina; 1 brother Wilbur Gwinn (Viv) of Newark, Ohio; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a host of extended family and friends.
Services will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday, February 11, at Smathers Funeral Chapel, with Pastor Roger Thornton, Jr., and Pastor Mike Whisman officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery at Mt. Lookout.
Friends may call one hour before the service from 1 - 2 p.m. at the funeral home.
