Robert Banks "Shag" Callaway went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, November 19, 2017. He is reunited with loved ones, rejoicing and free from the pain and brokenness of his aging body.
Born October 17, 1928, in Raleigh, WV, he was the son of the late George and Mabel Fisher Callaway of Raleigh.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Betty Callaway and Emogene Griffith, and a son, Rodney Dean Callaway.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 56 years, Avigail Meadows Callaway of Shady Spring, daughter, Shelia Anne Callaway and her fiancé Elias Isaac of Beckley, sons, Robert Wayne Callaway and wife Sheila of Daniels, Randall Scott "Slick" Callaway and wife Angela of Shady Spring, two grandchildren, Robert James "RJ" Callaway and wife Danielle of Daniels, Chelsea
Brooke Fields and husband Andrew of Columbus, Ohio, two great grandchildren Anna Kay Callaway and Sophie Marie Callaway of Daniels, and several nieces and nephews.
He served in the Army and was discharged after WWII. He also worked for Republic Steel, transferring to Southern PA as a mine foreman in 1961, from which he retired in 1973. Known as Shag by his close friends and family, he was a loving husband, father and grandfather who always wore a smile. He encouraged his children in their every endeavor and was very active in their lives. His children thank him for the wealth of knowledge and values he passed on and for being a great dad. He enjoyed operating heavy equipment and was often seen on his tractor. He spent many hunting and fishing seasons with his son, grandson, and faithful dog, Corky, cooking and enjoying the outdoors. He loved gardening and was a self-taught carpenter who could build or repair most anything. He was always ready with a memorable story that left an impression on anyone he met.
He was a member of Maxwell Hill Baptist Church since returning to Beckley in 1973. His faith was lived out as he loved and gave of himself to all those around him. He will be greatly missed.
