Roy's Story

Roy Daniel "RD" Lucas II went to be with the Lord on September 4th, 2017 at the Pittsburgh VA hospital at the age of 40, from a longtime illness.
RD was born in Beckley, WV to Roy and Sandra Lucas. He graduated from Independence High School in 1996, and then joined the United States Army. In the Army, RD served in the Infantry, and was awarded the Top Gun award while serving in an Armor unit. Finally RD served as a Military Intelligence professional.
RD served two tours in Iraq and one in Afghanistan. His awards include the Army Commendation Medal (7th Award), Joint Meritorious Unit Award (2nd Award), Army Good Conduct Medal (3rd Award), National Service Defense Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal with Campaign Star, Non Commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon (3rd Award), Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon (2nd Award), Army Reserves Overseas Training Ribbon, Driver and Mechanic Badge (Mechanic), and 1st Calvary Division Combat Spurs.
If you wanted to see what G.I. Joe looked like, all you had to do was look at SFC Roy Daniel Lucas II. In the Army, RD quickly earned the reputation of being a tough but fair Soldier that carried those qualities on when he became a Non Commissioned Officer (NCO). Many that knew him knew that he had a big heart and had the confidence to follow him into combat.
In his spare time, RD loved to spend time with his family that included hiking, fishing, mountain biking, and camping. RD also loved cigars, action movies, and football.
RD married Laura Schmaltz on December 17th, 2004 in San Antonio, TX and she survives.
Also surviving is daughter Aspen Lucas, brother Keith Lucas his wife Erica, their children Ava and Hunter, and his father Roy Daniel Lucas. RD was preceded in death by his mother, Sandra Lucas.
Visitation for family and friends will be held at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, 5251 Robert C. Byrd Drive, Beckley, WV 25801 on Tuesday, September 12, 2017 from 6-9PM.
Funeral Service will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, September 13, 2017 at 12:00PM. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.
