Samuel Edward Wood, 76, died July 24, 2017.
He was born in Columbus, Ohio on April 4, 1941, son of the late John and Mary Wood.
Sam and his sister Lois Wood McCutcheon grew up in Beckley, WV. In 1963, he graduated from West Virginia University, married Patricia Meyer Wood, and joined the US Army as a 2nd Lieutenant. He served in the Corps of Engineers until 1968, reaching the rank of Captain.
Sam's career as a Civil Engineer took him and his family to Ft. Mitchell KY, Jacksonville FL, Barboursville WV, Charlotte NC, Montgomery AL, and overseas to Saudi Arabia and Somalia. He earned an MBA from Winthrop College and in 1992 Sam was hired by the US Dept. of State to build US embassies in Lima, Peru; Havana, Cuba (US Interest Section); Moscow, Russia; and finally in Abuja, Nigeria where he was the Project Manager. Sam retired in 2006 and moved to Sun City Carolina Lakes in 2008, where he was actively involved in the kayaking club, woodworking, and grandfather-ing. Sam also served on the vestry of his church.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years Patricia; sons Stephen (& Joy) and Bryan (& Jody), sister Lois (& Randall) McCutcheon; and four Wood grandchildren, Noah Samuel, Lucas William, Cameron Grace, and Zoe Emily.
Funeral services will be held at noon on Wed. July 26 at All Saints Anglican Church, 5328 Hemby Road, Weddington, NC, 28104. Memorial donations may be given to the church Columbarium Fund. Condolences for the family may be offered online at www.mcewenpinevillechapel.com.
