Arthur James Shrewsbury, 80, of Basin, passed away on Wednesday, July 26, 2017 at Raleigh General Hospital following a short illness.
Born October 7, 1936 at Herndon, he was the son of the late Austin Shrewsbury and Effie (Mills) Shrewsbury Mills.
James was a retired coal miner with 33 years of service having last worked at Eastern Associated Coal and was a member of UMWA. In his younger years, he logged with his brother Jack and Noah Reed.
In his leisure he loved to stay busy on various projects, piddling and working on vehicles, machinery, riding his tractor and four wheeler, and gardening. James had a soft spot for kids and animals. He fed a swarm of hummingbirds, songbirds, and raccoons. He had a special horse named "Sugar" who also helped him stay busy.
In addition to his parents he is also preceded in death by one sister, Goldie Abner; and one brother, Jack Shrewsbury.
Those left to cherish his memory include his two sons, Gary Shrewsbury and his companion, Sandy Mills of Camp Creek and Harry Blankenship and his wife, Joann of Basin; one daughter, Kathy Blankenship of Basin; two brothers, Russell Shrewsbury and his wife, Debbie of Basin and Ceberd Shrewsbury and his wife, Cathy of Peaks Ridge; three sisters, Gracie Foley of Beckley, Ethel Gibson of Maben, and Caroline Johnson of Huntley, Illinois; and numerous grandchildren, great- grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
Services will be 1 P.M. Sunday, July 30, 2017 at Tankersley Funeral Home Chapel, Mullens with Rev. Charles A. McKinney Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in the Shrewsbury Family Cemetery, Basin.
Friends may call one hour prior to services Sunday at the funeral home.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
