Charles Edward Cooper, 89 of Beckley, WV passed away after a short illness on August 30, 2017. He was born November 7, 1927 at Camp Creek, Mercer County. Charles was the son of the late, John E. Cooper and Phebie Clarice Clark Cooper.
He was a kind, loving and gentle person. He graduated from WWHS in the class of 1946. Charles was a coal miner, retiring from Westmoreland Coal Company. He was a member of the UMWA; a veteran of the U.S. Navy with the rank of Boatswain Mate First Class, serving proudly during the Korean Conflict. He loved spending time with his family and friends, camping, fishing, gardening and enjoying the outdoors and fellowship.
He was proceeded in death by his parents; his wife of 54 years, Norma Jean (Hutchens) Cooper; a sister Ila Faye Long.
Charles loved the Lord and was a faithful, active member of Calloway Heights Baptist Church and sang along with his wife in a gospel quartet for several years.
Survivors include two sisters, Ina Jean Sharps and husband, Ronald of Columbus, OH, Elizabeth Bays and husband, Lowell of Stockbridge, Georgia; brother-in-law, Richard Hutchens of Beckley, WV; sister-in-law, Mary Lou Crum and husband, Donald of Beckley, WV, very special friends, Edwin Marshall and wife, Phyllis of Beckley, WV, his caregiver, Jean Isom and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at 2:00 PM Sunday September 3, 2017 at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley with Pastor Bill Parker officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Edwin Marshall, Don Crum, Eddie Bays, Rick Hutchens, Benjamin Crum and Frank Andrews.
Friends may gather with the family Sunday from 12 2 at the funeral home.
