Denise's Story

Text size

Our beautiful, sweet Denise went to be with the Lord on August 30, 2017, after a long illness.
Born, December 9, 1958, in Beckley, WV, Denise was the daughter of Betty Joe Foley Mills and the late Bernard Franklin Mills. Denise lived her entire life in Beckley, a community that she loved and spent her life serving.
She was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School and then earned a B.A. degree in Education from Concord College and later a M.A. degree in Education from WVU. Denise loved the career she had chosen and touched the lives of countless school children by faithfully serving Raleigh County as an elementary and middle school teach for 28 ½ years.
Denise was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Allen Armentrout, and her father, Bernard Franklin Mills.
Left behind to cherish her memory is her daughter, Kayleigh Jo Armentrout, who was the apple of her eye, and her mother and best friend, Betty Jo Mills, both of Beckley; sister, Lori Mills Harris and husband, Cal Harris, and their children Emily and Ethan, and brother, Joe Mills and wife, Debbi, and their children Erin, Katie and Kelly, all of Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
Denise loved the simple things of life: wildflowers, feeding and naming the birds, making pickled corn and working in her flower and vegetable gardens. She had a wonderful sense of humor, sending gag gifts to her brother, Joe, at Christmas, always joking around with her brother-in-law, Cal, and making everyone laugh at the many cherished family gatherings.
Denise and Kayleigh shared a unique bond as mother and daughter and enjoyed serving together at Carpenter's Corner in Beckley. Denise loved the congregation at Faith Community Church in Beckley, where she recently became a member. She was a rock of faith, had a tender heart of love for the Lord and all those around her, a gentle spirit and always a giver of everything she had. Denise will be known as someone who leaned on the Lord; a life well-lived.
Funeral services will be Saturday, September 2, 2017, at 2:30 PM at Faith Community Church, 299 Gray Flats Road, Beckley, WV, with Pastors Jason Lowe and Sam Peterson officiating. Visitation for friends and family will be Saturday from 12:00 PM to 2:30 PM at the church. Burial will follow at the Family Mills Cemetery at Egeria, WV.
In lieu of flowers, Denise's memory would be honored should contributions be made to Faith Community Church.
