Dr Leonard's Story
Leonard Carl Nelson, loving husband and father, died at age 96 in Stony Brook, New York on August 23rd.
He became president of West Virginia Tech in 1961 and after serving 25 years he became the school's longest standing president. He was skilled at promoting Tech and acquiring funding from the legislature for long needed upgrades and new buildings. During his tenure, Tech saw enormous change and growth. Among his many accomplishments, he held the honor of Professor Emeritus and is the namesake of the WVU Tech College of Engineering and Sciences.
As an active member of his communities, Leonard served on the Board of Directors of the Laird Foundation, Inc.; Montgomery General Hospital; Montgomery Chamber of Commerce; Charleston Federal Savings and Loan Association, and was a member and vice-chairman of the West Virginia Capitol Building Commission. Leonard was also honored by the Rotary Club.
He was predeceased by his brothers, Kenneth, Donald and Dwight and his first wife, Barbara.
Saddened by loss but enriched by Len's love are wife Rita Wicks-Nelson, sons Randall (Johnett) and David (Pat), and daughters Laurie Adams (Mark) and Sherri McLean (Mike), step-son Nicholas Poulos (Nancy), step-daughter Lise Poulos, 13 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren and numerous other family and friends.
