Henry's Story

Henry Paul Kizer, aka H. Paul Kizer or "Buster", 75, of Mt. Hope WV, passed away on July 11th, 2017 of heart failure.
He was born on March 14th, 1942 in Mt. Hope WV, where he grew and graduated from Mt. Hope High School in 1961. In the summers during his high school years, he also worked in the coal mines in the area. He played high school football at Mt. Hope High School, and won the State High School Championship in 1961, and also was named Lineman of the Year in 1961. He attended the University of Tennessee on a football scholarship, and later graduated from Marshall University with a bachelor's degree in History and Physical Education. While in college his married his high school sweetheart Linda Carrel Criss.
After graduation, he worked as a history teacher at Mt. Hope High School, and also coached football. Later he became a mine inspector working in Mt. Hope WV. He also started a construction company and built over 200 houses in the Beckley area. He then started and owned Maben Energy Corporation from 1977 to 1992. He then was a mining consultant until he retired in 2007.
He was a man of great determination and persistence! He had a tremendous work ethic, and a great mind for business. He was ranked 19th in the nation in coal production, and held a world record in several areas for coal production. He provided jobs for thousands of people from the Beckley area in the coal business. He also was very generous and helped his family and friends all he could over the years.
He was preceded in death by his parents; Ernest Edward Kizer and Ruby Accord Kizer, from Mt. Hope WV, and one sibling Kitty Loretta Gerhold from Detroit Michigan. He is survived by 4 siblings; Ruby Carol Jollay, from Mt. Hope WV, Betty Jo Stover from Niceville FL, John Edward Kizer and his wife Inge from Alta WV, and Franklin Harvey Kizer and wife Ruth from Elizabethtown Kentucky. He also has 4 living children, two with Linda Carrel Criss named Melony Dawn Banks and husband Erick John Banks from Matthews NC and Stacy Lynn Harker and husband Alan Dillistin Harker from Fort Mill, SC. Also, two children with Dawn Stalka Matherly named Paul Michael Kizer from Shady Spring WV, and John Edward Kizer and wife Paige from Grandview WV. He was also a grandfather to to 6 grandchildren, Jackson Lee Bailey, Christian Davis Bailey, Nicholas Kane Harker, Allie Beth Harker, Aspen John Kizer, and Jude Benjamin Kizer.
The memorial service will be held at 11 am on Saturday, July 15th 2017, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home in Beckley WV.
