Lela's Story

Fern Dame, 84, of Ghent, passed away Sunday, September 3, 2017 at her residence following a courageous battle with Acute Myeloid Leukemia.
Born May 5, 1933 at Basin, she was the beloved fourth child of eleven children born to the late Lawrence and Gladys (Basham) Shrewsberry.
Fern attended Long Wanted Grade School, Stoco High School, and Berea College in Berea, KY. She married Robert J. Dame in 1955 and was able to travel throughout several European countries during his three year tour of duty, then to California on the next tour with the U.S. Air Force.
She worked at the FBI in Washington D.C. and in 1962 began a 33 year career at the National Geographic Society heading up their Photographic Library. She was able to travel to Russia, Ireland, and Newfoundland, as well as to many states in the U.S.
Fern attended Mount Pisgah Church in Basin throughout her youth, was baptized, and continued her life in the Christian faith. Along with her love of the Lord, she enjoyed cooking, gardening, growing flowers, feeding and watching birds, and photography.
In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her husband, Robert J. Dame; sisters, Eva Dian and Nola L. Shrewsberry; one brother, Reynold "Connie" Shrewsberry; and daughter-in-law, Diane Dame.
Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter, Valerie McKendree and husband, Tim of Daniels and her son, Robert Dame of North Port, FL; grandchildren, Jeremiah McKendree and wife, Autumn, Elizabeth McKendree and her fiancé, Rickie Lilly, Kimberly Dame and fiancé, John Fandozzi and Kelly Dame; great grandchildren, Brinley and Madison McKendree; Reynard Shrewsberry (Eva), Alma Lusk, Imarie Zambrana, Reva Shrewsberry, Zelma Greathous, Ferrel Goes (Jim), sister-in-law, Violet Shrewsberry, Karen Marsh (Jim), sister-in-law, Julia Corazzini (Steve), brother-in-laws, William Dame and Richard Dame; sister-in-law, Ann Dame; and she was a beloved aunt of several nieces and nephews.
Memorial service will be 1 PM, Saturday, September 9, 2017 at Tankersley Funeral Home Chapel, Mullens with Pastor Ken Clark officiating.
Friends may call one hour prior to services Saturday at the funeral home.
In keeping with Fern's wishes, the body will be cremated.
In lieu of flowers, donations of sympathy may be expressed to the Hospice of Southern West Virginia, 454 Cranberry Drive, Beckley, WV 25801.
