Ronald's Story

Ronald Owen O'Dell, 87, of Sweeneysburg community, passed away Monday, September 11,2017 at his home.
Ron was born in Eagle Rock, VA, to Joseph Claypool and Dixie Simms O'Dell on September 24, 1929. Ron was the second of 11 children born of this union. He had many wonderful memories of farm, family and country life with his parents and siblings.
Ron was a graduate of Nicholas County High School and Beckley College. Ron met the love of his life while singing with the Coleman Choir. He married Nada Mae Sweeney on August 26, 1950. He worked for Raleigh Laundry at the time of their marriage. In 1959, he went to work for G.C. Murphy Company, which led him to many West Virginia communities. He retired after 32 years of total service. He had been the manager of the Welch G.C. Murphy store for 18 years. He was very active in the Welch Community. He was a member of Rotary International, Welch Volunteer Fire Department, and Welch Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of Masonic McDowell Lodge #112 for over 50 years. He was aLso a member of the Order of Eastern Star Princeton Chapter # 53 for over fifty years. He was a member of the United Methodist Temple where he was active with United Methodist Men.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Nada Mae Sweeney O'Dell, brother Eugene "Gene", Floyd "Mork", and Benjamin "Ben", and son in law Michael Thomson.
He is survived by his daughter, Nancy Thomson of Sweeneysburg and Ronald O'Dell II of Lanark; grandchildren Alison Suptic and husband John of Sweeneysburg, Jennifer Thomson of Sweeneysburg, and Phillip O'Dell of Lanark. He is also survived by his siblings, Joann Wells, Wilma Phipps, Betty Curtis, Gary O'Dell and wife Rosemary, Connie Brown and husband Bill, all of Beckley, J.W. "Bill" O'Dell and wife Suzanne of Leesburg,VA and Linda Allen of Daleville, VA. Ron also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and friends he considered family.
Funeral services will be conducted at 12 noon on Saturday, September 16, 2017 at the United Methodist Temple in Beckley, with Rev. Steven Hamrick officiating. The viewing will be from 6 pm to 8 pm on Friday, September 15, 2017 in the church sanctuary. Burial will be at the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be family, Phillip O'Dell, Sam Brown, Sammy Brown, Matthew Warden, Chris Warden, Brian O'Dell, John O'Dell, and Stephen Fields.
The family suggests that donations of sympathy can be made to the United Methodist Temple, 201 Templeview Drive, Beckley, WV 25801 or Bowers Hospice House c/o Hospice of Southern WV, 454 Cranberry Drive, Beckley, WV 25801.
