Roy's Story

Roy Jessie McKinney, age 75, of Coal City, WV, passed away at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley on Thursday, August 31, 2017.
Born on July 16, 1942, in Besoco, he was the son of the late Brady McKinney and Edna Bolen McKinney.
Mr. McKinney was a 30 year coal miner, and last worked for the Raleigh County PSD.
He attended Cool Ridge Freewill Baptist Church, and lived most of his life in the Coal City area.
In addition to his parents, two brothers Dale and Alvin McKinney preceded him in death.
Those survivors left to cherish his memory include his wife of 52 years, Oma Lilly McKinney; four children, Tammy McKinney of Missouri, Roy Jessie McKinney II and wife Darlene of Odd, Peggy Griffin and companion Jimmy of Midway, and Stephen McKinney and wife Marie of Coal City.
Eight grandchildren: Jorden Fleig and wife Jackie, Jessica Hylton and husband Curtis, Shalyn Fleig, Paige McKinney, Zachary Hatcher, Hannah McKinney, Brayden McKinney, and Bryce McKinney; 1 great grandchild, Oliver Fleig; a brother Charles McKinney and wife Tina of Pennsylvania, six sisters, Layla Vacchio of New York, Libby Foley of Coal City, Lucy Foley of Sophia, Patsy McKinney of Coal City, and Susan Dolinger and husband Eddie of Coal City, and Betty McKinney of Sophia.
A Service of Remembrance will be held to Celebrate the life of Roy McKinney on Thursday, September 7, 2017, at 11AM at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley with Rev. Danny Gilfilen and Rev. Frankie Lyons officiating. Friends may visit with the family from 6 PM until 9 PM on Wednesday at the funeral home. As per Mr. McKinney's personal request, cremation will follow.
