Wanda's Story

Text size

Wanda Marie Atkins Helvey, 76, of Beckley, was born in Pemberton, WV, on November 4, 1940. She walked through Heaven's Gates to be with the Lord on August 8, 2017.
Wanda grew up in McAlpin, WV. She proudly graduated from Mark Twain High School in 1960 and was a member of the Glee Club for 4 years.
She was united in marriage to Charles L. Helvey on July 29, 1961 in Beckley, WV. He preceded her in death January 1, 1994.
Wanda retired from Richmond Cleaners after being employed with them over 25 years. She selflessly volunteered her time at Jackie Withrow Hospital, formally Pinecrest Sanitarium.
Wanda was known as caring, humble, and Godly. She was a long time member of Bethel Freewill Baptist Church where she was baptized by Preacher Bill Calhoun. She faithfully served as a member of the Ladies Auxiliary.
Wanda had a love for music, spending time with family, and cooking. She loved to cook her all time favorite biscuits and gravy, and pinto beans, fried potatoes, and cornbread. She was well known for "Aunt Wanda's Coal Miner's Pie" at family gatherings.
Wanda's character and temperament can best be shown from the time she suffered a stroke due to a cerebral aneurysm 10 years ago. She had every right to cry, be mad, or even fall into depression, but instead she loved and lived every moment she was given until God called her home.
She is preceded in death by her parents Russell and Mae Atkins, sisters Frances Coughlin and Glenna McGlenn, brother Franklin "DeeDee" Atkins, niece Jennifer Atkins, nephews James Coughlin and David Milam.
Those left to cherish her memory are her daughters Veronica (Jeff) Workman of Beckley, WV and Janet (Louis) Zarzour of Chattanooga, TN; foster daughter Grace (Larry) Stover; grandchildren Misty (Jimmy) Hendrix, Tabitha (Randy) Zarzour-Fulton, Ashley (Jerod) Bradbury, Bobby (Marsha) Modley, Justin (Renee) Cook, and Zachary (Alexandra) Zarzour; great grandchildren Lexis Farmer, Jonathan Kershner, Cole Currens, Robert Gowins, Kira Bradbury, Kassidy Bradbury, Annalise Tomlin, Kaden Bradbury, Corey Hendrix, Liam Zarzour, Hunter Fulton, and another great grandson on the way; siblings Russell Atkins Jr., Mary Heath, and Drema Milam; special family members Bob Modley and Willard "Butch" Cook; full time caregiver Sheila Canterbury; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be at Bethel Freewill Baptist Church, MacArthur, from 10 am to 1 pm on Saturday, August 12. A funeral service will follow at 1pm. Burial will be at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, following the services.
Should friends desire, a donation in her memory may be sent to Bethel Freewill Baptist, P.O. Box 118, MacArthur, WV 25873.
I have fought the good fight. I have finished the race.
I have kept the faith. 2 Timothy 4:7
