Charles E. Gwinn Obituary
Charles E. Gwinn, 79, of Lewisburg, WV, passed away peacefully on December 15, 2024.
Charlie courageously battled Parkinson's disease for many years, fighting with the strength, resilience and a determination that inspired everyone who knew him, all while never losing his signature sense of humor. He was born on February 21, 1945, in Summersville, WV, to Howard and Alda McClung Gwinn. He was the fifth of eight children, and often joked about growing up in a home with six sisters and only one bathroom.
Charlie earned a degree in Education from Fairmont State College but spent most of his career as a self-employed entrepreneur, starting and running several businesses. His work ethic, generosity, and humor left a lasting impact on everyone he worked with. Known for his incredible hospitality, Charlie was always eager to open his home and beloved farm to friends and family, making everyone feel welcome with his warm heart, a well-stocked bar and kitchen, and a genuine love for sharing good times.
Charlie was preceded in death by his parents and three of his sisters: Rose Crews, Jane McMichael, and Elizabeth Foster. He is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Jill Ziegler Gwinn; sons, Charles Eric Gwinn (Carey) and Lee Aaron Gwinn (Jennifer); his brother Russell Gwinn (Barbara); sisters, Mary Ruth Olson (Sten), Thelma Gwinn Taylor, and Nancy Gwinn Franco; and his cherished grandchildren, Eric, Jack, Jacob, and Gracyn Gwinn. He also leaves behind many beloved nieces, nephews, and extended family members. Charlie held a special place in his heart for his family and friends, including a close family friend Travis Wills (Stacy) and children Madison, Morgan, Mason and Marlee, who Charlie considered "related by love". Charlie's love for family and friends was immeasurable, and he looked forward to the annual reunions in Richwood, WV, where laughter, food, horseshoes, and stories abounded. A master storyteller, Charlie was known for weaving tales so vivid that no one could ever be sure where the truth ended and the fiction began.
A Memorial Service and Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 pm on January 4, 2025, at the Elks Golf and Country Club, 368 Brush Rd., Lewisburg, WV 24901.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Parkinson's Foundation, 5757 Waterford District Drive, Suite 310, Miami, FL 33126, to support research in honor of Charlie's courageous fight.
Charlie will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege to know him. As he approached the end of his journey, he said the thing he would miss most was simply being with everyone. His warmth, laughter, and boundless affection will be forever cherished.
