Eugenia Thomas Obituary

Eugenia Thomas, 96, of Charleston, formerly of Meadow Bridge, was granted peace and released from pain on May 3, 2024 after a life well and fully lived.

Born at Meadow Creek on Easter Sunday, April 8, 1928, she was the only child of the late Ernest Hillie and Nellie Bragg Garten. At age 3 she, with her parents, moved to Meadow Bridge. In 2015 the health of her husband required they leave their beloved farm and community to reside with their daughter.

Eugenia graduated from MBHS, Beckley College, Concord College and WVU with a master's plus in education and taught her first year in a one-room school at Sturgeon's Branch. She was transferred to Meadow Bridge Elementary where she taught second and third grades and the first Headstart summer programs. She later taught Art to students grades 1 through 12. When her parents' health declined, she retired after 28 years to provide their care.

Among her adjectives are: creative, energetic, encouraging, patient, musical, hardworking, nurturing. Treasured memories are weekend forays to gather fossils, bugs and plants as she instilled a deep respect for nature. She was a devoted daughter, wife, and mother and had a soft spot in her heart for all wildlife and numerous pets, especially a succession of Boston Terriers. Her hands were never idle.

Eugenia was preceded in death by her husband of over 75 years, Warren D. Thomas Jr. (2020), their son John Ernest Thomas (2021) and grandson Ski Warren Thomas (2015).

Left to cherish her memory is son Warren D. Thomas III of Burke, VA; daughter Pamela Gibson of Charleston; daughter-in-law Sara Farley Thomas of Wyco; granddaughter Sonja Dee McClure (Tom) of Spotsylvania, VA; granddaughter Sheila Don George (John) of Gaithersburg, MD; great-grandsons Chase Sawyer (Lauren), Aaron Sawyer, Cameron Sawyer, Christian George and Tristan George; great-great granddaughter Haleigh Alice Sawyer.

Per her request, there will be no public service and her cremains will be placed beside her late husband at Wallace Memorial Cemetery, Clintonville.

The family extends gratitude to Hospice of Kanawha Valley for their tender care. A heartfelt thank you to Nora and Levi Jennings for the handmade cards they regularly sent and she immensely enjoyed.

If you wish to honor Eugenia's memory, do a kindness to someone in need.
