Janet White Winfrey Obituary

Janet White Winfrey, 88, of Christiansburg VA, formerly of Princeton, went to be with the Lord on January 23, 2022 at her daughter's home in Christiansburg surrounded by her loving family. Janet was born March 2, 1933 in Princeton, the only daughter of the late Hewitt E. and Bertha Damewood White. She was a lifelong resident of Princeton until October 2020, when she moved to Christiansburg to Commonwealth Senior Living to be near her daughter. Commonwealth became her home and she was very content there. The family is very grateful for her Commonwealth extended family, including all the dining room gals, Hazel, Eula, Dorothy, and Doris. Her extended family also included many wonderful caregivers; Tara, Maleigha, Noah, Hanah, Valentina, and April. She was a 1951 graduate of Princeton High School where she graduated with honors as salutatorian. She went on to graduate from Concord College in 1953 with an Associate in Secretarial Science. After graduation, Janet began work as a secretary, and through the years worked for N&W Railway, North American Rockwell, and Princeton Community Hospital. She came home in the 1960s to be a full-time mom to her two daughters. Janet later returned to work as the Executive Secretary to the administrator at Princeton Community Hospital for several years. She married the love of her life in 1957, Elwood Winfrey. They were married for 52 years, until his passing in 2009. Janet was a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother. She was always a caregiver and took care of her parents, as well as Elwood's parents when the need arose. She loved the Lord, her family, and was, as her high school yearbook stated, always, "in the midst of things". Her meals were legendary in the family, because she believed that there could never be too much food, and the array of dishes she served her family for a single meal was vast, as well as delicious. Her sourdough bread and pound cakes that she baked and took to friends and family will certainly be missed. Janet was a member of First United Methodist Church in Princeton and had attended Stinson United Methodist Church since she was small. At Stinson, she served the Lord as the pianist and choir director. She was also a member and past president of the United Methodist Women. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Elwood; and her two brothers, Earl E. White, and Joe E. White. Left behind to mourn her passing are her two loving daughters, Lisa W. Hansen and husband Carl of Fayetteville WV, Julie W. Fuller, and husband Sheldon of Christiansburg VA; four grandsons that she adored, Erik Hansen, Drew Hansen and MJ, Nicholas Fuller and wife Amber, and Zachary Fuller. Also left behind are her special sister-in-law Wilma and husband Jack Reitz, several nieces and nephews, and special friend and loving sister-in-law Peggy White. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, January 26, 2022 at Seaver Funeral Home in Princeton with Pastor Eric Stovall officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton. Friends may call at the funeral home from 12:00 PM until the service hour on Wednesday.
