Springdale, West Virginia - Melvin Ray Hanshew, 93, of Springdale, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, November 23, 2022, in the Peyton Hospice House, Lewisburg, following a long battle with dementia.

Born November 10, 1929, at Springdale, he was the son of the late Adam and Rheba (Gill) Hanshew.

Melvin was a proud U.S. army veteran serving during the Korean War. He retired from the coal mines. Melvin was a member of the Springdale Church of Christ. He was an accomplished woodworker.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 63 years, Joyce McKinney Hanshew; three brothers Leonard, Harold, and Delbert Hanshew.

Survivors include his son Ronnie Hanshew of Prince George, Virginia; his daughter Sandra Hanshew Ryder (Dudley) of Springdale; grandchildren Ray Hanshew (Jennifer) of Colonial Heights, Virginia, Angie Lilly (Brett) of Muddy Creek Mountain, Alley Callison (Jason) of Rainelle, Shelby Callery of Richmond, Virginia, and Bryan Callery of Rockville, Maryland; great-grandchildren Emma and Parker Hanshew, Ariel, Chase, and Gavin Callison and Jack Lilly; two sisters Ada Sifers and Violet Cummings, both of Springdale; and a host of extended family and friends.

Services will be 12 p.m. Saturday, November 26, at Smathers Funeral Chapel with Pastor Robby Shorter officiating.

Friends may call one hour before the service from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the funeral home.
